Answers to a few commonly asked questions.
The Jr. Friars Rugby Club was founded in 2015. We are organized, funded and supported solely by volunteers and sponsors. The Jr. Friars are registered to play in the Rugby Illinois sanctioned middle school league, which consists of over 20 teams.
Rugby is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the U.S, and the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer. It is a free-flowing fast-paced game. All players can pass, catch and run with the ball, and play both defense and offense at any given time during the game. And, most appealing is the fact that there is a position for everyone who wants to play – large or thin, short or tall.
For our 2017 season, we will support a U12 team and a U14 team for the 2017 season (roughly 5th-6th graders and 7th-8th graders, respectively).
Beginning on Sunday February 12th, indoor practices will be held on Sundays from 4:30-6:00pm at the Fenwick High School gymnasium.
As soon as weather permits, we will move outdoors for practice on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4:30-6:00pm at the Fenwick Athletic Fields (Bonnie Brae and Greenfield just north of the Priory in River Forest).
All players will play at least one half of a game – even if they did not attend practice!
All games are played in a festival format (i.e., all teams in the league play in same location on the same day).
The 9 game season begins April 2 and continue on Sunday afternoons through the first weekend in June (On Mothers Day and Memorial Day games will be played on Saturday).
Players must provide a mouth guard and cleats (football or baseball cleats, with a single front cleat, are NOT permitted).
A full uniform is included in the registration fee.
