Answers to a few commonly asked questions.

  • About the Jr. Friars Rugby Club

The Jr. Friars Rugby Club was founded in 2015. We are organized, funded and supported solely by volunteers and sponsors. The Jr. Friars are registered to play in the Rugby Illinois sanctioned middle school league, which consists of over 20 teams. Our U12 team has qualified for playoffs in both of its seasons, finishing 2nd in the state in Division II (2017) and 3rd (2016). Our U14 team combined with the West Suburban Barbarians to win the state championship in Div. II (2016) and 4th in Div I (2017).

For the 2019 season, we will support a U12 team and a U14 team (5-6 graders and 7-8 graders respectively).

  • What is rugby?

Rugby is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the US, and the second-most popular sport in the world behind soccer. It is a free-flowing, fast-paced game. All players can pass, catch and run with the ball, and play both defense and offense at any given time during the game. Most appealing is the fact that there's a position for everyone who wants to play—large or thin, short or tall.

  • What equipment is needed?

For indoor practices: Gym shoes and shorts, and water bottle.

For outdoor practices: We recommend mouth guards, weather appropriate clothing, a water bottle, and cleats (football or baseball cleats, with a single front cleat, are NOT permitted. Soccer cleats are good.). Mouth guards are mandatory for games.

A full uniform is included in the registration fee.

  • How do I sign up?

You can register online using the links provided on this webpage.

  • About games

All players will play at least one half of a game – even if they did not attend practice!

All games are played in a festival format (i.e., all teams in the league play in same location on the same day).

The nine game season begins April 2 and continue on Sunday afternoons through the first weekend in June.
